On Wednesday at the Toyota’s Tokyo office, Vice Chairman Takesh Uchiyamada, who is the brain behind the team that designed the Prius, told reporters that the auto maker has sold more than 5 million hybrid cars as at late march, after it first went on sale16 years ago.
The hybrid passenger car uses a technology that delivers low gas usage by recharging the engines as it travels.
When Toyota first released the car in the U.S, people were in agreement that they would not need such a car since prices of gas is low then. But now, the price of gas has skyrocketed and people are flocking to get the Prius.
The hybrid car even helps to deliver electricity to disaster zones after the Tsunami quake in Japan on March 2011.
For the first time in a single year, the global sale of the hybrid car hit 1.2 million in 2012.
